Mariners Down Manhattanville, 3-1, For Gaiser's First Win At Kings Point

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 7, 2016) – First-year head coach Tim Gaiser earned his first victory for Merchant Marine on Wednesday night as the Mariners topped visiting Manhattanville, 3-1, at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The scores of the match were 25-22, 23-25, 25-18 and 25-19. The win draws USMMA's record to an even 1-1, while the Valiants lose for the first time this season and fall to 3-1.

Three Mariners recorded double-digit kills, as junior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) led the way by with a match-high 16 kills and 25 digs, while sophomores Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) both had 13 kills apiece. Like Pope, freshman Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) also registered a double-double, leading all players in the match with 43 assists to go along with 14 digs.

As a team, Merchant Marine played strong defense, compiling a total of 91 digs on the night. Pope led with 25, junior Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) had 19 and senior libero Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) picked up 18, while Kappas rounded out the double-digit diggers with her 14. Both Gleason and senior Jordy Macbeth (Orlando, Fla.) led all players on the night with four blocks.

Manhattanville was led by junior Kerry Mackey, who tallied 11 kills, and classmate Meagan Dattoma added 10 kills and 13 digs. Senior Megan Quinabo also picked up a double-double with 32 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore Laura LiVolsi and senior libero Adrianna Alves both recorded double-digit digs as LiVolsi had a team-high 19 and Alves picked up 17.

The Mariners are back at it this weekend, when they travel up to New London, Conn., on Saturday, Sept. 10, for their Superintendents' Trophy matchup against arch-rival Coast Guard.
