Volleyball Opens 2016 Season With Tough 3-2 Loss To Rutgers-Newark At Home

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 2, 2016) – The USMMA women's volleyball team lost its season-opener on Friday afternoon to visiting Rutgers-Newark, 3-2, at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners won the first two sets by identical scores of 25-19, 25-19, but the Scarlet Raiders came-from-behind to steal the next three sets and the match with scores of 25-14, 26-24 and 15-12 in the deciding fifth set.

Junior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) led all players in the match with 16 kills while also registering eight digs. Classmate Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) recorded a double-double with a match-high 24 assists to go along with a team-high 19 digs.

Senior Jordy Macbeth (Orlando, Fla.) contributed 10 points on the night for the Mariners on five kills, two aces and six assisted blocks. Classmate Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) both picked up double-digit digs, as Marionakis had 14 and Lefler had 10.

Rutgers-Newark (2-0) was led by sophomore Cassie Luken and junior Karolina Kopacz, who both recorded seven kills each. Kopacz contributed nine assists and 17 digs on defense, while classmate Sue Riley led all players in the match with 27 digs from the libero position. Senior Kathy Hormaza added nine assists and 10 digs.

The Mariners (0-1) are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 7, when they host non-conference opponent Manhattanville College right back at the Liebertz Gym. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available by following those links.
