KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Aug. 24, 2016) – First-year USMMA head women's volleyball coach Tim Gaiser announced the scheduled for the upcoming 2016 season on Wednesday. The slate features 26 regular season contests, including 11 against opponents from the newly-joined Skyline Conference.
The campaign begins next Friday, Sept. 2, when the Mariners play host to Rutgers-Newark at the Liebertz Gymnasium in O'Hara Hall. Former Skyline Conference foe Manhattanville College will visit Kings Point the following Wednesday, Sept. 7, for another non-conference contest.
The Mariners then hit the road for seven straight matches starting with its Superintendents' Trophy tilt against arch-rival Coast Guard on Saturday, Sept. 10, up in New London, Conn. The following weekend Merchant Marine travels up to Buzzards Bay, Mass., to compete in the Seventh Annual Maritime Classic. There they will take on SUNY Maritime on Saturday, Sept. 17, in what will count as the two schools' Skyline Conference openers, while action at the Maritime Classic wraps up on Sunday, Sept. 18 with a match against hosts Mass. Maritime, followed by a non-conference contest against Maine Maritime.
A trip to Manhattan to take on Hunter on Tuesday, Sept. 20, precedes the Mariners first Skyline tri-match of the season, which is hosted by Old Westbury on Saturday, Sept. 24. USMMA will square off against the host Panthers in the morning and then take on Purchase during the afternoon.
Two mid-week, non-conference home matches follow, as the Mariners welcome in New Rochelle on Tuesday, Sept. 27, and Bard on Thursday, Sept. 29, before a tri-match at Montclair State that following Saturday, Oct. 1, against Lehman and the host Red Hawks.
The Mariners then come back to the friendly confines of Liebertz Gym for three straight matches, beginning with a non-conference contest against Brooklyn College on Monday, Oct. 3, followed by a Skyline Tri-Match on Saturday, Oct. 8, against Farmingdale State and St. Joseph's of Long Island.
The next six matches are all away from Kings Point, as the squad hits the road on Wednesday, Oct. 12, to take on Lehman for the two squads' second meeting of the month. The Mariners then travel to Kean University in Union, N.J., on Saturday, Oct. 15, for a non-conference tri-match against Notre Dame (Md.) and Kean. After a mid-week match at the College of Staten Island on Tuesday, Oct. 18, USMMA will play their final two away matches of the season at a tri-match at Sarah Lawrence College on Saturday, Oct. 22, where they will face the host Gryphons and Mount St. Vincent in league action.
The next two weekends will feature four home Skyline matches on consecutive Sundays, beginning with a dual-match on Sunday, Oct. 23, when the Mariners host St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) and Sage, before the regular season concludes on Sunday, Oct. 30, with a tri-match featuring Yeshiva and Mount St. Mary.
The Skyline Tournament, which features the top six seeds of the 12-team conference, begins with quarterfinal matches on Tuesday, Nov. 1, followed by the semifinals two days later on Thursday, Nov. 3. The 2016 Skyline Champion will be crowned on Saturday, Nov. 5. The NCAA National Championship Tournament will follow later in November.
The Mariners will be in search of their fourth-straight winning season in 2016 and are coming off of a 2015 campaign that saw them go 15-11, including a 1-6 mark in Landmark Conference action.
