Mariners Split Action On Second Day of KP Volleyball Classic

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 10, 2015) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team picked up a three-set sweep over Lehman early in the morning of the second day of the Kings Point Volleyball Classic on Sunday, but then lost in straight sets to Kean in the finale. The Mariners record moves to 12-9 overall on the season after the split.

USMMA swept the Lightning, 25-7, 25-15, 25-13, behind a team-high nine kills by sophomore Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.). Classmate Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) dished out 17 assists and freshman Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) led the squad with 11 digs.

Against the Cougars, the Mariners fell in straight-sets, 25-17, 29-27, 25-22 despite double-doubles by Pope and Gleason. Pope led the Mariners with 12 kills to go along with 11 digs, while Gleason recorded 21 assists and a team-best 15 digs. Sophomore Rebecca Snyder (Jacksonville, Fla.) contributed eight kills and junior Darin Zacharias (Virginia Beach, Va.) picked up 10 digs.
