KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 19, 2015) – The USMMA women's volleyball team is hosting the Sixth Annual Maritime Classic this weekend at the Liebertz Gymnasium and action got underway on Saturday with three matches. The Mariners played in the final match of the day against Massachusetts Maritime, and defeated the Buccaneers in straight-sets, 25-7, 25-9 and 25-4. Merchant Marine improves to 6-3 on the season, while the Bucs fall to 1-6.
Junior Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) recorded a match-high eight services aces in the match, while also matching the team-high with five digs. Freshman Megan Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) led the way offensively for the Mariners with nine kills, while classmate Brianne Cook (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) had seven kills to go along with 25 assists. Freshman libero Hannah Hill (Parkersburg, W.Va.) picked up five digs.
Mass. Maritime was led defensively by juniors Emma Ethier and Stephanie O'Connor with five digs apiece. Either also contributed three assists, while junior Melissa Harris recorded a team-high two kills.
In earlier action on the day, Maine Maritime defeated SUNY Maritime, 3-1 (25-17, 25-16, 19-25, 25-8), but then the Privateers defeated Mass. Maritime in straight sets, 25-19, 25-13, 25-10.
The Sixth Annual Maritime Classic Volleyball Tournament wraps up on Sunday with two matches, beginning with a 10 a.m. clash of Mass. Maritime and Maine Maritime, followed by the finale with Mariners of the USMMA hosting the Mariners of Maine Maritime in an all-Mariner showdown at 12-noon.
