Volleyball Improves To 4-0 With A Pair Of Sweeps At USMMA Invitational

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 5, 2015) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team picked up its third and fourth straight 3-0 victories to start the 2015 season and are now riding a four-match winning streak after earning straight-set wins over Brooklyn College and Farmingdale State on Saturday at the USMMA Volleyball Invitational at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners won the first match in the morning over the Bulldogs, 25-17, 25-16, 25-21, and then clinched the finale later in the day over the Rams, 25-10, 25-18, 25-22.

Against Brooklyn, sophomore Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) recorded a double-double with a match-high 11 kills to go along with 12 digs. Classmate Rebecca Snyder (Jacksonville, Fla.) also had double-digits kills with 10 in the match with an impressive .529 hitting percentage (10K/1E/17A) and fellow sophomore Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) registered 24 assists and eight digs. Junior Darin Zacharias (Virginia Beach, Va.) picked up 11 digs in the back row.

The Bulldogs were led by senior Sasha Roopchand, who totaled seven kills and a match-high 14 digs. Junior Crystal Wu added 16 assists.

In the finale vs. Farmingdale St, freshman Brianne Cook (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) led the way for the Mariners with a match-high 12 kills, while also dishing out nine assists and picking up six digs. Again, Pope reached 11 kills in the contest with seven digs to her name also. Gleason recorded 19 assists and freshman libero Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) led all players in the match with 16 digs.

The Rams' juniors Christina Hickey and Barbara Wright both had a team-best six kills apiece, while senior Francesca Calderon picked up 12 digs and classmate Megan Pisciotta had a match-high 21 assists.

The Mariners return to action this Wednesday night, Sept. 9, for a non-conference match on the road up in Purchase, N.Y., against Manhattanville College. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the Valiants' Kennedy Gymnasium. Live stats will be available by following this link.
