KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 2, 2015) – On Wednesday night, the USMMA women's volleyball team swept visiting Pratt Institute to win its 2015 home-opener at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Merchant Marine took the first set, 25-6, before claiming the match with a 25-5 second-set win and a 25-7 victory in the clincher. The Mariners improve to 2-0 on the young season, while the Cannoneers open the year 0-1.
Sophomore Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) recorded a match-high 22 assists and seven service aces on the night. She distributed the wealth pretty evenly throughout the Mariner lineup, as five players recorded four-or-more kills for USMMA, including a match-best five by freshman Megan Toler (Prunedale, Calif.). Gleason, junior Jordy Macbeth (Orlando, Fla.) and freshmen Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) and Brianne Cook (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) all had four kills apiece, and rookie Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) picked up a match-high eight digs.
The Mariners are back at it this Saturday, when they host the USMMA Volleyball Invitational at Liebertz Gym. Four matches are scheduled for the day, including two for Merchant Marine. The squad will host Brooklyn College at 10 a.m. and then face Farmingdale State in the finale, which is tentatively scheduled for 4 p.m. Live stats and video will be available for both USMMA matches and links are available by clicking here.
