Montclair, NJ – The Merchant Marine volleyball team picked up a 3-0 victory over Cedar Crest College and a 3-2 win over Montclair State University Saturday afternoon. Junior Michelle Danhof (San Antonio, TX) racked up 24 kills on 65 total attempts in the Mariners 2-0 day. USMMA was also sharp at the service line, totaling 32 aces on the day, including 12 from Sophomore Gabby Marionakis in the Cedar Crest match.
Merchant Marine (5-0) started the day with a sweep of the Falcons, compiling 27 kills along with a .250 hitting percentage. Darin Zacharias (Virginia Beach, VA) anchored the Mariners defense with 12 digs as Cedar Crest was held to a negative .121 swinging mark. Riley Huelbig (Poolesville, MD) directed the attack and dished out 20 assists in the win.
Cassandra Palma (Loomis, CA) added 9 Kills, at a .364 clip along with a service ace and 6 digs. The Mariners dispatched the Falcons in three sets, 25-16, 25-4, 25-16. The second set score marks one of the largest winning margins in Mariners history.
The Mariners used all five sets to dispose of Montclair State as Michelle Danhof (San Antonio, TX) led the offense with 19 kills. Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, NY) recorded 38 assists and 9 digs to set the Mariners in the right direction. Jennifer Perkins came in swinging with a scorching .412 hitting percentage in the match with 9 Kills and 5 digs. Darin Zacharias (Virginia Beach, VA) held the defense strong and posted 17 digs as the Red Hawks were limited to a 0.137 hitting percentage.
Merchant Marine held strong throughout the entire match and outperformed the Red Hawks 14-25, 27-25, 19-25, 25-18, 15-10..
The Mariners are 5-0 on the season and will continue on Tuesday (9/9) night against Medgar Evers at home at 7:00pm.
