NEW YORK, NY – The USMMA women's volleyball program took its 6th loss of the year last night to a strong Hunter College team in three straight sets (25-23, 25-22, 25-17). Currently Kings Point sits at a 13-6 record overall and 1-4 in the Landmark Conference.
The first set was back and forth throughout the first half. With the Hawks up 12-10, USMMA rattled off seven straight points to take a 17-12 lead. Hunter came back with a strong fight and was able to squeak out the first set keeping the Mariner offense at a 0.148 hitting percentage.
The second set was even closer than the first, with no team being able to open a lead larger than three points. The Mariners racked up 6 digs in the set and 11 kills, lead by senior outside hitter Cassandra Palma with 5 kills. Sophomore Kayla Gleason helped out with 2 service aces and 9 assists on the set. At a 22-22 tie, it was anyone's game and Hunter started swinging.
The third set ended with Hunter on top at 25-17 having kept the Mariner attack at bay.
The Mariners return to action on Saturday as they play host to Medgar Evers and Manhattanville College in a tri-match beginning at 2:00pm in O'Hara Hall. The first match of the day between USMMA and Medgar Evers will be celebrated as the Mariners' annual Dig Pink match to bring awareness to breast cancer and to honor those who have fought the disease.
