Patchogue, NY – The USMMA volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory over host St. Joseph's (LI) and a 3-0 sweep of NYU Poly at a Saturday afternoon tri-match. Jordy Macbeth (Orlando, FL) slammed down 20 kills along with a sizzling .417 hitting percentage over the two matches. Michelle Danhof (San Antonio, TX) also lit up the stat sheet with 17 kills and 27 digs in the Mariners two wins.
Merchant Marine (10-3) started off the day with a tight first set against the Eagles but ultimately took the opening game 28-26, following back-to-back kills from Cassandra Palma (Loomis, CA) and Kelly Hodges (Lakewood, CO). The Mariners would bounce back after dropping the second set with decisive 25-17 and 25-14 triumphs in the final two frames to claim the match, 3-1.
Riley Huelbig (Poolesville, MD) dished out 36 assists versus St. Joseph's (LI) and freshman Darin Zacharias (Virginia Beach, VA) reached double-digits with 10 digs. In the middle of the attack, Macbeth supplied 12 kills and two blocks while Jennifer Perkins (North Attleboro, MA) added eight kills and two blocks of her own. The Mariners finished the match by making only two errors in the fourth set and hitting at an outstanding .500 clip.
Palma paced the USMMA offense in the Mariners second win over NYU Poly this season, registering 11 kills. Paige Queen (Falcon, CO) got the setting duties in the second match and distributed 30 assists. The Mariners racked up 17 service aces in both matches as Danhof and Zacharias both tallied four against the Blue Jays.
Merchant Marine again posted a .500 hitting percentage in the final game of a match, routing NYU Poly, 25-8 in the third set. The Blue Jays were limited to just 10 kills for the match, including only one in final set.
The USMMA volleyball team has now won four of its last five matches and is next scheduled to host Purchase State Wednesday night inside O'Hara Hall.
