Merchant Marine Falls to NYU, 3-0

New York, NY - The USMMA volleyball team suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of NYU Wednesday night.  Freshman Darin Zacharias anchored the Mariners defense with a match high 13 digs.  Cassandra Palma (Loomis, CA) paced the attack with nine kills and also added 10 digs.

Merchant Marine (8-3) made only two errors in the first set and tallied a .167 hitting percentage.  However, the Violets were more efficient and posted 12 kills en route to a 25-15 victory in the opening frame.

NYU (12-1) got double-digit kills from Gigi Morally and Alexandria Mao with the latter recording 14 kills and 13 digs.  The Mariners chipped away at a 21-16 deficit and found themselves down 23-21 following a Palma kill.  USMMA would committ two staight service errors as the Violets took the second set, 25-22.

The Mariners finished the night with five blocks as Jennifer Perkins (North Attleboro, MA) supplied three and Jordy Macbeth (Orlando, FL) racked up two solo blocks.  Riley Huelbig (Poolesville, MD) dished out 21 assists but NYU totaled 16 kills in the third set.  NYU closed out the 3-0 sweep with a 25-19 triumph in the third set.

The USMMA volleyball team returns to action this Saturday in a tri-match against St. Joseph's (LI) and NYU Poly.
