Brooklyn, NY – The Merchant Marine volleyball team picked up a 3-0 victory over St. Joseph's (BK) and a 3-1 win over Mount St. Vincent Saturday afternoon. Freshman Jordy Macbeth (Orlando, FL) racked up 22 kills and posted a blistering .436 hitting percentage in the Mariners 2-0 day. USMMA was also sharp at the service line, totaling 29 aces on the day, including 19 against the Dolphins.
Merchant Marine (8-2) started the day with a sweep of the Bears, compiling 36 kills along with a .279 hitting percentage. Darin Zacharias (Virginia Beach, VA) anchored the Mariners defense with eight digs as St. Joseph's (BK) was held to a .074 swinging mark. Riley Huelbig (Poolesville MD) directed the attack and dished out 28 assists in the win.
Jennifer Perkins (North Attleboro, MA) added six kills and four service aces while Cassandra Palma (Loomis, CA) also had four aces to go along with her nine kills. The Mariners dispatched the Bears in three identical sets, 25-17, snapping what had been a brief two-game skid.
The Mariners needed four sets to dispose of Mount St. Vincent as Michelle Danhof (San Antonio, TX) led the offense with 12 kills. Paige Queen (Falcon, CO) recorded a double-double with 33 assists and ten digs. Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, FL) posted nine digs and five service aces as the Dolphins were limited to a -.022 hitting percentage.
Merchant Marine combined for 10 blocks over the two matches with Perkins registering five total blocks. Perkins also hammered home 11 kills versus Mount St. Vincent as USMMA took a 3-1 decision, 25-18, 22-25, 25-9, 25-15.
The Mariners are 2-1 on their current six game road trip, which will continue Wednesday night at NYU.
