Bethlehem, PA – The USMMA volleyball team dropped matches to Catholic, Scranton, and Susquehanna over the weekend to round out the 2012 Landmark Conference schedule. Juniata finished with a perfect 6-0 record in league play to claim the top-seed in the 2012 Landmark Conference Tournament. The Mariners were unable to earn a victory in league action and will miss out on the postseason.
Merchant Marine (11-13, 0-6 Landmark) opened the weekend on Saturday with a 25-10, 25-13, 25-13 loss at the hands of Catholic. The Mariners were held to just 11 kills in the match while Michelle Danhof (San Antonio, TX) anchored the defense with 20 digs.
USMMA played better in its second match of Saturday but were unable to overcome Scranton. The Royals picked up the victory in straight sets behind 13 kills from Jenell McFadden. Cassandra Palma (Loomis, CA) posted seven kills to pace the Merchant Marine attack.
The Mariners continued to fight tough on Sunday and pushed Susquehanna to the limit in the second set but eventually fell, 25-23. In that game, USMMA totaled a weekend high 13 kills along with a .150 hitting percentage. Kelly Hodges (Lakewood, CO) blasted a team high nine kills in the loss while Danhof again reached the 20 dig plateau.
The USMMA volleyball team will play its final home match of the 2012 season Tuesday night as they welcome New Jersey City to O'Hara Hall at 7:00 pm.
