Merchant Marine Defeats York (NY); Falls to William Paterson

Wayne, NJ – The USMMA volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday afternoon in a tri-match with William Paterson and York (NY).  The Mariners dropped a four set decision to the host Pioneers before sweeping the Cardinals.

Merchant Marine (10-10) has now defeated York twice in the 2012 season.  Michelle Danhof (San Antonio, TX) led the charge in the second meeting with ten kills and a .360 hitting percentage.  USMMA swung at a .300 clip for the match and earned the victory with scores of 25-15, 25-15, and 25-12.

The Mariners opened the day by winning the first set against William Paterson, 25-14.  Kelly Hodges (Lakewood, CO) had a superb match for USMMA, racking up ten kills without making an error.  Cassandra Palma (Loomis, CA) paced the attack with 17 kills in the four set match.  The Pioneers rallied to take the final three sets of the match: 25-19, 25-20, 25-23 for the come from behind win.

Danhof and Caitlin McCabe (Edgewood, NM) both totaled a match high 13 digs against William Paterson.  Riley Huelbig (Poolesville, MD) dished out 39 assists as the Mariners hit .190 in the match.

Merchant Marine returns to action this Wednesday night on the road against Westbury before heading to the second Landmark Conference weekend of the season.
