Kings Point, NY – Director of Athletics Sue Petersen Lubow has announced that Annie Moddrell has been named the assistant volleyball coach at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Moddrell played collegiately at Indiana University and has been coaching at the high school and club levels since 2005.
"Annie comes to us after having a very successful club and high school coaching career, not to mention a great career playing in the Big Ten," said USMMA Head Coach James Seitelman. "We are very excited to add someone with her experience and knowledge to our staff. Not many Division III programs can boast an assistant with her playing and coaching pedigree."
Moddrell's coaching experience at the club level began in 2005-08 as an assistant for numerous teams at the Hoosierland Volleyball Club. She went on to become an assistant coach for the top 18 year old team at the St. Louis CYC Volleyball Club in both 2009 and 2010. On the high school circuit, Moddrell served as the JV Coach and Varsity Assistant Coach for Waterloo High School in 2009 as well as Bishop Chatard High School in 2010 and 2011. In 2011, Bishop Chatard finished as the Indiana State Runners-up.
Moddrell's collegiate playing career saw her start for two seasons as a middle blocker for the Hoosiers. She earned a spot on the 2005, 2006, and 2007 Academic All-Big Ten Team while Indiana also earned an AVCA Team Academic Award. In 2006, Moddrell also earned Big-Ten Defensive Player of the Week accolades. Moddrell's name still appears in the Indiana record book as she is fifth on the career list with a .265 hitting percentage. She was also a force at the net and ranks ninth in Hoosier history with 273 block assists and tenth all-time in total blocks with 309.
Moddrell graduated from Indiana in 2009 with a Bachelor's in Secondary Health Education / Physical Education.
She will get her first taste of Mariners volleyball as Merchant Marine kicks-off the 2012 season this Friday at the Kings Point Invitational.
