KINGS POINT, N.Y. – On Wednesday evening, the United States Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team earned its 10th victory of the season as the Mariners shutdown SUNY Old Westbury, 3-1, at the Liebertz Gymnasium in Kings Point, N.Y. With the win, USMMA improved to 10-11 on the year. Following the defeat, the Panthers dropped to 16-6 overall.
The final scores of the four sets were: 25-18, 19-25, 25-20 and 25-23. For Kings Point, the rookie middle hitter duo of Michelle Daneu (Malabar, Fla.) and Julie Flaherty (West Islip, N.Y.) were at it again. Daneu finished with 11 kills, while Flaherty recorded 10. They both had two service aces each. Sophomore outside hitter Jessica Tyack (Lake Isabella, Calif.) picked up nine kills in the match. Senior setter Jenna Palaschak (Annandale, Va.) dished out 37 assists.
Head Coach James Seitelman and the Mariners return to action this weekend when they host the second Landmark Conference Round-Robin Tournament of 2010. On Saturday, USMMA will square off against Catholic University at 1 p.m., while on Sunday, Kings Point takes on Goucher College at 11 a.m. and then Susquehanna University at 1:30 p.m.
