Volleyball Suffers Hardships on the Road in Pair of Tri-Matches
ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball squad competed in two tri-matches this weekend. On Friday, the Mariners fell to FDU-Florham and Rutgers-Newark, both by final scores of 3-0, in Newark, N.J. On Saturday, USMMA dropped a pair of matches against Franklin & Marshall College and Muhlenberg College, also both 3-0, in Allentown, Pa. With the defeats, the Mariners dropped to 10-18 on the season.
Friday: FDU-Florham 3, USMMA 0 (11-25, 13-25, 18-25)
In the opening match on Friday, senior Ana Fuschetto (Swink, Colo.) paced the Mariners with seven assists, while sophomore outside hitter Jessica Tyack (Lake Isabella, Calif.) and rookie outside hitter Kelly Hodges (Lakewood, Colo.) had three kills each.
Friday: Rutgers-Newark 3, USMMA 0 (20-25, 17-25, 19-25)
In this contest against the host school Rutgers-Newark, Fuschetto led the way in assists once again with 14. Hodges had the most digs on the team (10), while also harboring the squad-high in kills (6).
Saturday: Franklin & Marshall 3, USMMA 0 (11-25, 17-25, 17-25)
Fuschetto distributed 12 assists, while rookie middle hitter Julie Flaherty (West Islip, N.Y.) recorded a team-best six kills. Freshman opposite hitter Grace Mariani (Amherst, N.Y.) tied for the match-high with three service aces.
Saturday: Muhlenberg 3, USMMA 0 (14-25, 12-25, 18-25)
Hodges and freshman middle hitter Michelle Daneu (Malabar, Fla.) had six and five kills, respectively. In addition, Tyack smashed down five kills as well. Fuschetto notched five digs and 13 assists.
Head Coach James Seitelman and the Mariners return to action on Saturday, Oct. 30, when they close out their 2010 season with a tournament at Hunter College.
