NEW YORK (Dec. 2, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's track & field team competed in the TCNJ Invite on Saturday night at the Armory in Manhattan to open up the 2017-18 indoor season. One Academy record fell at the event and the Mariners had five top-five finishes.
Sophomore Alexa Vandermeer (Grove Heights, Minn.) set a new USMMA indoor record in the 300 meter run with a time of 44.44. The previous record was 47.39, which was set back in 2011 by Lauren Rattan.
Junior Kelsey Ramirez (Stevensville, Mich.) had two top-five finishes on the night, coming in third place in the 1000 meter run (3:28.59) and fifth place in the mile (5:51.70). Sophomore thrower Ally McFadyen (Saint James, N.Y.) also placed in the top-five twice, coming in third in the shot put (10.15m / 33 feet, 3.75 inches) and fifth in the weight throw (10.51m / 34 feet, 5.75 inches). Freshman Dakota Morrow (Seneca, S.C.) rounded out the Mariners' top-five finishes by coming in fifth place in the 1000 meter run in 3:52.86.
Up next, the Mariners will take part in the Wagner Invitational on Friday, Jan. 5, 2018. The event will take place at the Ocean Breeze Park Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.
