HAVERFORD, Pa. (Feb. 18, 2017) – Freshman Alexa Vandermeer (Grove Heights, Minn.) broke the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy 400 meter run record on Saturday at Haverford's Keogh Invitational, as she placed sixth in the event with a time of 1:03.39. Also, junior Alex Miller (Stevensville, Mich.) with freshmen Sophia Tucker (Navarre, Fla.), Vandermeer and Anna Lewis (Lakehead, Fla.) broke their own 4x200 record in 1:56.27, just 24-hundreths of a second ahead of last week's time.
This is the third straight week that the Mariners have seen an Academy record fall and Vandermeer was also a part of the last two – the 4x400 relay two weeks ago and the 4x200 relay last week.
Vandermeer beat the time set by Miller by just five-hundredths of a second, as Miller had set the previous record of 1:03.44 back in the 2015-16 season.
Both Miller and Vandermeer were also a part of the 4x400 relay team on Saturday – along with freshmen Lewis and Tucker – that won the event with a time of 4:23.35.
The Mariners had four other top-10 finishes, as freshman Valerie Bowman (Newark, Ohio) placed third in the 3000 meter run in 12:29.64, the 4x200 squad of Miller, Tucker, Vandermeer and Lewis came in fifth in 1:56.27 and Miller placed seventh in the 60 meter dash in 8.64 and ninth in the 200m in 28.44.
Saturday's meet concludes the Mariners' indoor season. The squad will be back in action in late March for the beginning of the 2017 outdoor season.
