Merchant Marine Shines at Vassar Twilight Meet in Search of ECAC Qualifiers
Poughkeepsie, NY – The United States Merchant Marine Academy men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Vassar College Twilight Meet this past weekend in Poughkeepsie, NY as the Mariners were in search of additional qualifying times and records heading into ECAC Championships.
Senior Gretchen Holoubek (Severna Park, MD), senior Jessica Tyack (Lake Isabella, CA) and freshman Kenneth Pressey (Yorktown, VA) each earned ECAC qualifying marks and personal best records as the Mariners draw close to the end of their 2013 campaign.
Holoubek shattered the USMMA record in the 5000m by over 40 seconds, winning the event with a time of 18:16.82; a full 23 seconds under the ECAC qualifying mark.
In the Triple Jump, Tyack won the meet with a distance of 10.9m; a new personal record, academy record, and ECAC qualifying jump.
Pressey's High Jump of 1.93m was not only a personal best record, but qualified him for ECAC Championships as well.
In the 800m, freshman Tomas Sanchez (Okinawa, Japan) came in a close second as he too set a new personal high, crossing the finish line in 1:53.5; ranking 39th in the nation.
Merchant Marine's men's relays did outstanding once again as the 4x100 team of Alex Waterbury, Tyler McDaniel (Colorado Springs, CO), Jacob Weaver (Clifton, TX), and Thomas Duncan (Orlando, FL) won their event with a time of 43.76s; their second best mark of the season.
The 4x400 relay of McDaniel, freshman Ian Helis (Carlisle, PA), Sanchez, and Weaver came in a close second with a time of 3:24.79; just missing out on ECACs.
Other notable finished included Weaver placing fourth overall in the 200m with a time of 23.29s and freshman Gloria Mahoney (Atlanta, GA) finishing third overall in the 400m Hurdles with a new personal best mark of 1:12.18; narrowly missing out on the USMMA record.
The Mariners have one more opportunity to nab additional qualifying marks and records this weekend as they will be competing in the May Meet in Oneonta, NY before they head to ECACs in two weeks.
