The Merchant Marines continued their improvement at the United States Coast Guard Quad Meet this past Saturday with some very strong performances. The Mariners competed against the USCGA, Connecticut College and Rhode Island College and doubled their point total from a year ago at the same meet. While the tight turns on the 180m track don't yield to particularly fast times there were still some surprisingly quick marks.
Fresh off breaking an Academy Record that had stood since 1993 in the the 500m last weekend, Senior Captain Lauren Rattan broke her own Academy Record in the 600m, coming across the line 1:47.03. Freshman Amber Kinter, who also eclipsed the Academy Record last week in the 500m, finished just one spot behind Rattan in the 600m with a time of 1:56.59.
Junior Tara Mulligan threw a bomb in the Weight Throw and smashed the Academy Record that she had set a season ago. Her mark of 12.31m was nearly a two foot improvement to the record book.
The women took down another record in the 4x200m relay just squeaking by the previous record set last season. SR Lauren Rattan, FR Michelle Danhoff, SR Kimberly Glore, and JR Tara Mulligan finished with a time of 2:04.56.
Senior Renee Hogan (Team Captain throughout the XC season) had the best track meet of her career to date. Hogan dropped 34 seconds off her time in the 3K from a week ago to set a new personal best mark of 12:49.35, finishing in 3rd place. She also ran to a 5th place finish in the 1000m (3:43.66) and anchored the 4x400m relay with a fantastic split.
"It is always nice to go out there and break a few records. We have a few ladies performing significantly better than they every have. We have some newcomers that are really making a difference as well. We are showing much more depth than we have had as a program in years. It is really exciting to watch the development of this team," stated Head Coach Greg Lott after the competition.
The ladies will travel to Wesleyan University next Saturday 1/21 for the Wesleyan Winter Invitational.
