Women’s Track/Field Has 2 Academy Records Fall at DuCharme Relays

CARLISLE, Pa. – On Saturday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's indoor track and field team competed in the DuCharme Relays at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. Keeping up with this season's impressive meets, the Mariners broke another pair of Academy records at Dickinson this weekend.

Junior co-captain Lauren Rattan (Oklahoma City, Okla.) continued her quest to rewrite the USMMA women's indoor record book this weekend. Her 47.39 run in the 300-meter bested the former Academy record (set in 1993) by four seconds. In addition, Rattan teamed up with freshman Kelly Hodges (Lakewood, Colo.), senior Cristina Fernandez-O'Toole (Washington Depot, Conn.) and  rookie Brooke Mueller (Springfield, Va.) to take down the school record in the 4 x 1 mile relay, placing second in the meet with a time of 27:16.32.

Senior Derien Jastrzebski (Lafayette, Colo.) ran two personal best performances in both the 55-meter and 300-meter. The Lafayette native placed sixth overall in the latter event.

Moreover, Hodges ran a solid finish in her first 800-meter event with a clip of 2:47.70.

"This was a fun meet that gave our athletes a chance to run some different events and relax a little the week before our conference championship meet. To take down two Academy records in the process just made the weekend all the better," Head Coach Gregory Lott commented.

The Mariners return to action on Saturday when they travel to Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pa. for the 2011 Landmark Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.
