Women’s Swim & Dive Falls To #21 Rowan Saturday On Senior Day

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 2, 2019 – UPDATED Feb. 4, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's swimming & diving team lost its home-finale to #21 Rowan University, 198-87, on Senior Day this past Saturday at the O'Hara Hall Pool. In defeat, the Mariners close out the 2018-19 dual meet schedule with an 8-2 record, while the Profs improve to 9-2. 

Prior to the meet, the Mariners paid tribute to their four graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony honoring Danielle Christmas (Tavernier, Fla.), Pamela Grod (Northbrook, Ill.), Kara Korengel (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Colleen Griffin (Kinnelon, N.J.)

Picking up first-place finishes on the day for the Mariners were sophomore Victoria Kirshner (Santa Clarita, Calif.) in the 100 free with a time of 55.97 and Korengel on the three-meter board with a score of 270.83. 

Kirshner also had a pair of second-place finishes in the 50 free (25.69) and the 50 fly (28.20), while Korengel placed second in the one-meter board (234.83). 

Also coming in second place for USMMA were freshman Samantha Hunt (Franklin, Texas) in the 100 fly with a time of 1:03.69, sophomore Christina Hogan (North Andover, Mass.) in the 500 free in 5:53.98, classmate Emily Orski (East Islip, N.Y.) in the 200 IM with a time of 2:35.21 and the 200 free relay team of Grod, Hogan, junior Sara Cosenza (Peoria, Ariz.) and sophomore Angeline Lei (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) in 1:53.03.

Up next, the Mariner divers will compete at the NYU Invitational on Friday night, Feb. 8, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at New York University's Palladium Athletic Facility Natatorium on 14th Street in Manhattan. The full team's next meet isn't until later this month at the 2019 Metropolitan Conference Championships the weekend of Feb. 22-24. As always, the ultra-competitive meet will be held at Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J. More information on the meet can be found at this link
