KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 17, 2018) – On Saturday, the USMMA women's swimming & diving team opened the 2018-19 season with the USMMA Memorial Invitational at the O'Hara Hall Pool. The Mariners had a handful of impressive showings on the day, including senior diver Kara Korengel (Cincinnati, Ohio) earning her first NCAA Qualifying Mark of the season in the very first meet.
Korengel won the three-meter board with a qualifying mark of 271.25. The 2018-19 mark for NCAA qualifications is 265 points. The senior now has to hit the mark in the three-meter dive just one more time to officially qualify for NCAA Regionals in March. Korengel also came in third place in the one-meter dive with a score of 206.10.
Sophomore Victoria Kirshner (Santa Clarita, Calif.) was the Mariners leading swimmer with a trio of second-place finishes in the 200 individual medley (2:19.30), the 50 freestyle (25.63) and the 100 butterfly (1:03.03).
Additional notable finishes came from freshman Samantha Hunt (Franklin, Texas), who came in third place behind Kirshner in the 100 fly with a time of 1:04.50 and junior Meika Gathy (Waterford, Conn.) in the 100 free with a fourth-place showing in 57.39.
