Swimming & Diving Teams Learn Valuable Lessons At The Safe Center of Long Island; Mariners Coming Together For Cultural Enhancement

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 21, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's and women's swimming & diving coaches Sean Tedesco and Johan Lopez took over 20 members of the two teams to the Safe Center of Long Island in Bethpage, N.Y., back on Friday, Feb. 10, during their competition-free weekend. The Midshipmen-athletes that attended the community service event came away learning valuable social lessons pertaining to family violence and sexual assault affecting the surrounding Long Island community.

"Our experience was educational for our future leaders," commented Tedesco, "as they continue to promote a culture of respect."

The team met the Safe Center's Heather Stevenson, who provided two hours of education in the area of prevention and awareness of sexual assault, how to become an "upstander" and all of the services that the center provides. Stevenson then gave the student-athletes a tour of the facility.

The Center directly supports the Midshipmen at USMMA by offering a 24-hour reporting hotline for any incidents that require immediate assistance during the Academy's off-hours.

Additionally, members of the swimming & diving teams – namely junior Liz Grove (Winchester, Va.) and senior Jolyn Green (Riverside, Calif.), along with numerous other Midshipmen and student-athletes – have been doing their part to enhance the culture at the Academy. The group has put together a great presentation titled "Be The Change" that they have been presenting to a handful of groups around the campus. In late January, they presented to the entire USMMA Athletics Staff during a staff meeting.

Among a good number of goals of the group is calling on the Academy community to strive for forward progress and unity, create a positive atmosphere and climate on campus that will in turn foster a feeling of ownership, camaraderie and growth.
