NEW YORK (Jan. 17, 2017) – The USMMA women's swimming team picked up a non-conference victory over Hunter College on Tuesday night by the final score of 58-37. The win improves the Mariners' record to 8-1 on the season, while the Hawks suffer just their second loss of the year and fall to 9-2.
The Mariners won eight of the 11 events on the night. Freshman Erica Lou (Flushing, N.Y.) and sophomore Ella Sherrill (Ketchikan, Alaska) led the Mariners with three victories each in the meet. Lou touched first in the 200 individual medley (2:27.53) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.96), while Sherrill won the 50 freestyle (26.68) and the 100 free (58.16).
They were both also a part of the 400 medley relay team that started the night with a win for the Mariners in 4:20.75. They were joined on that relay squad by freshman Meika Gathy (Waterford, Conn.) and senior Jolyn Green (Riverside, Calif.).
Individually, Green was victorious in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:06.18, while Gathy touched first in the 500 free in 5:34.94. Senior Catherine Don (Quincy, Ill.) rounded out the Mariner winners by claiming first in the 200 free in 2:12.25.
Freshman Sara Cosenza (Peoria, Ariz.) had a season-best time in the 1000 free by five seconds, 12:15.50. Freshman Fallon Wulff (Chapel Hill, N.C.) recorded her season-best time by five seconds in the 200 free, 2:14.64 and senior Rebecca Slezak (Middle River, Md.) swam a 1:17.34 in the 100 fly, which was her best time of the season in that event.
Up next, the Mariners will host Skyline Conference opponent Mount St. Mary along with the men's squad this coming Saturday, Jan. 21. First event is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the O'Hara Hall Pool. A live video stream of the meet will be available by following this link.
