KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 10, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's swimming & diving team defeated a pair of Skyline Conference opponents on Tuesday night in a home meet at the O'Hara Hall Pool. The Marines downed St. Joseph's of Brooklyn by the score of 137-61 and triumphed over Mount St. Vincent, 137-21. USMMA improves to 7-0 on the season, with all seven victories coming in Skyline action.
The Mariners recorded first-place finishes in all 13 events on the night.
In diving action, senior Blythe Fentress (Shady Shores, Texas) won both the one-meter and three-meter events, as she recorded an NCAA qualifying mark in the one-meter dive with a score of 255.38.
Two Mariners won all three races they swam in – freshman Erica Lou (Flushing, N.Y.) and sophomore Ella Sherrill (Ketchikan, Alaska).
Individually, Lou touched first in the 200 freestyle (2:15.03) and the 100 backstroke (1:04.24), and she was also a member of the 200 free relay squad along with seniors Jolyn Green (Riverside, Calif.) and Catherine Don (Quincy, Ill.) and sophomore Colleen Griffin (Kinnelon, N.J.) that started the meet with a win in 2:03.74.
Sherrill won three individual races – the 200 individual medley (2:26.68), the 100 freestyle (57.45) and the 100 breaststroke (1:21.48).
The Mariners are back in action this Saturday, Jan. 14, when they travel up to New London, Conn. to take on arch-rival Coast Guard in a dual meet to earn an overall point in the race for the 2016-17 Superintendents' Trophy. First race is scheduled for 12-noon at the Bears' Roland Pool.
