Women’s Swimming & Diving Places Third At 2016 Landmark Championship Meet

GERMANTOWN, Md. (Feb. 14, 2016) – The USMMA women's swimming & diving team finished the 2016 Landmark Conference Championship Meet on Sunday and came in third place overall out of the eight teams competing with a total of 470 points. The Mariners crowned one more individual champion on Sunday and had two more Academy records broken, while junior Blythe Fentress (Shady Shores, Texas) was named the Landmark Diver of the Year for the second-straight year.

Freshman Tyler Wickesberg (Albuquerque, N.M.) won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:06.83. Wickesberg also led off the 400 freestyle relay squad that also featured freshman Ella Sherrill (Ketchikan, Alaska), sophomore Liz Grove (Winchester, Va.) and junior Jolyn Green (Riverside, Calif.). They placed third in the event and set a new Academy record by five seconds with a time of 3:39.60. To lead off the relay, Wickesberg's 100 free time of 53.79 was also a new Academy record.

These following additional swimmers reached the "A-Finals" of events 32-38:

  • Grove in the 200 backstroke, who finished fourth in the finals with a time of 2:10.92.
  • Sherrill in the 100 freestyle, who finished seventh in the finals with a time of 55.91.
  • Green in the 200 breaststroke, who finished third in the finals with a time of 2:27.83.

These following swimmers reached the "B-Finals" of events 32-38:

  • Senior Elizabeth Rose (Hamilton, Ohio) in the 200 breaststroke, who placed 12th in the finals with a time of 2:40.60.
  • Sophomore Rebecca Slezak (Middle River, Md.) in the 200 butterfly, who finished 15th in the finals with a time of 2:46.30.

Overall, the Mariners had four individual champions on the weekend. There were nine Academy records broken, including a couple of conference and meet records, and junior Blythe Fentress (Shady Shores, Texas) earned a NCAA cut for diving. Below are the complete results for USMMA from Sunday.

Up next, the men's swim & dive team will compete in the Metropolitan Championships next weekend. The event begins on Friday night, Feb. 19, and will last through Sunday, Feb. 21.
