Day 1 Recap (From Friday)

ROANOKE, Va. (March 9, 2019) – Senior Kimo Dial (Poway, Calif.) and junior Joshua Glantzman (Allenwood, N.J.) represented USMMA superbly at the NCAA National Championships this weekend down in Virginia. Both Mariner matmen earned All-American honors, as Dial finished in eighth place in the 133-pound bracket, and Glantzman used a couple of upsets to climb all the way up to a fourth-place finish at 184.

As a team, Merchant Marine finished the meet with 17 points, which is currently tied for 19th place. The meet concludes tonight with the championship matches for each weight class, so the Mariners' placing may change by Saturday night. The final placing will be available at the bottom of the USMMA Wrestling Schedule Page later this weekend.

Glantzman won his first two bouts on Saturday to reach the third-place match. He started the day with a win over Wisconsin-Whitewater's Nick Stencel in a back-and-forth match that ended with a 4-3 decision. The junior moved on to face the top-seed in the bracket, Dylan Roth of Heidelberg. Over the course of the seven minutes, he earned two takedowns and got the riding time point to come out on top for the upset with a 5-1 decision.

In the third-place match, Glantzman took the #3 seed Khamri Thomas of Johnson & Wales to a sudden-victory overtime after an acrobatic rolling escape from the floor to tie the score up at 1-1 in the third period, but he lost on a takedown by Thomas in the closing seconds of the first OT period.

Glantzman finished the NCAA Championships with a 4-2 record, including upsets over the #7 seed and the #1 seed in the 184-pound bracket.

Dial suffered a 4-2 decision loss to TCNJ's Jake Giordano in the wrestleback quarterfinals to drop to the seventh-place match. The final bout of his career was another nail-biter against Ferrum's Levi Englman. Both wrestlers scored two points in the second period, however Engleman earned the extra point after the time expired in the third due to riding time to claim a 3-2 victory.

Dial went 2-3 at nationals with an upset over the #5 seed in the 133-pound bracket on Friday.
