Wrestling Has Very Solid Day At Long Island Open

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Dec. 17, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team competed at the Long Island Open, hosted by Nassau Community College on Sunday. The Mariners came in sixth place out of the 10 teams that scored on the day with 80.5 points. Johnson & Wales University won the event with 300.5 points, followed by Waynesburg University in second with 143.5 points and the host Tigers in third with 97.5 points. 

USMMA had a total of six wrestlers place on the day, with juniors Tyler Craig (Snowhegan, Maine) and Brandon Joest (Kendallville, Ind.) taking second place at 133 and 197, respectively, with 2-1 records. 

Freshman Kieran Duggan (Woodbury, Conn.) came in third place at 165 with a 4-1 record and sophomore Collin Keil (Whitehouse, Ohio) finished in fourth place at 184 after going 2-2 on the day. 

At 165, senior Travis Ahrens (Mims, Fla.) took fifth with a 3-2 record and freshman Kai Rogers (Winfield, Mo.) came in sixth place with a 1-3 record at the event. 

Also picking up wins on the day were freshman Jace Garza (Holland, Mich.) at 125, classmates Charles Franchina (San Diego, Calif.) and Cole Clement (New Orleans, La.) at 157, fellow freshman Justin Montanez (Hoboken, N.J.) at 174, junior Joseph Fiore (Canadensis, Pa.) at 184, freshman Andrew French (Afton, Minn.) at 197 and junior Dan Dubinsky (Charlotte, N.C.) at 285.

The Mariners will be back in action in the New Year, when they take part in the North/South Duals, hosted by Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa., on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018. At the event, the Mariners will face the host Bears in a Centennial dual meet. Action is set to get underway at 9:30 a.m.
