Session 1 Recap

LA CROSSE, Wis. (March 10, 2017) – The 2016-17 USMMA wrestling season came to an end on Friday night at the NCAA National Championships with two Mariner wrestlers reaching the All-American Round, but falling just short of advancing to the second day of action on Saturday.

Sophomore Erik Beshada (South River, N.J.) finished the event with a 2-2 overall record at 157. He went 1-1 in the first session earlier on Friday and then earned an impressive 7-5 decision over RIT's sophomore Dempsey King in the consolation first round to reach the All-American Round. Beshada was defeated by Roger Williams senior Ty Herzog, however, via an 11-3 major decision.

After winning his only match early Friday morning over the #8 seed in the 184-pound bracket, senior Patrick Rooney (Belgrade, Minn.) fought hard, but narrowly dropped his first bout on Friday night to top-seeded freshman Owen Webster of Augsburg, 6-4. In the All-American Round in the wrestlebacks against second-seeded Christopher Chorzepa of Williams, Rooney came back from a 3-0 deficit to take a lead in the third period. Chorzepa earned points late to take a 7-6 lead, before Rooney tied the match up with an escape, however, Chorzepa claimed the victory after time ran out due to the riding time point.

Sophomore Victor Raigoza (Orland, Calif.) lost his first matchup at 285 on Friday morning, and then dropped an exciting match in the first round of the wrestlebacks Friday evening to sophomore Quin Gilliam of Loras. The bout was tied at 4-4 after the third period, however Gilliam earned the 6-4 win in the first sudden-victory overtime period with a take down.

As a team, the Mariners currently sit in a four-way tie in 40th place out of 68 teams. They finished the tournament with four points. Wartburg is currently leading the pack with 83 points, well ahead of second place Augsburg (47 points).
