LA CROSSE, Wis. (March 10, 2017) – All three USMMA wrestlers have made it through the first session of the NCAA National Championships on Friday afternoon and will compete later Friday night in the second session, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Eastern.
As a team, the Mariners currently sit in a tie with NYU for 20th place out of the 68 teams in Wisconsin with a total of 3.5 points.
Senior Patrick Rooney (Belgrade, Minn.) earned three of those points by pinning the eighth-seeded wrestler in the 184-pound bracket, Wheaton senior Jared Fekete, in his first-round matchup in 5:23. Rooney (17-1) advances to face the bracket's top-seed, freshman Owen Webster of Augsburg, in the Championship Quarterfinals later tonight. A potential Semifinal matchup would be against either fourth-seeded freshman Jordan Bushey of SUNY Oswego (36-0) or fifth-seeded senior Justin Kreiter of Luther (25-2), while the loser will face either second-seeded Christopher Chorzepa of Williams (25-2) or junior Deuly Espinal of SUNY Cortland (23-6) in the wrestlebacks.
Sophomore Erik Beshada (South River, N.J.) lost his first-round bout at 157 to second-seeded junior Logan Thomsen of Wartburg via a 18-1 technical fall. However, he rebounded to defeat Augsburg senior Grant Parker in a wrestleback preliminary round with a 6-3 decision, earning a half-point for Merchant Marine. Beshada (17-15) will move on to face sophomore Dempsey King of RIT (27-6) in an elimination bout later tonight in the wrestlebacks. The winner will face either #1 seed freshman Owen Webster of Augsburg (30-1) or Roger Williams senior Ty Herzog (32-11).
Sophomore Victor Raigoza (Orland, Calif.) suffered a loss via a 17-0 technical fall to his first round opponent at 285, fourth-seeded James Bethel of SUNY Oneonta. Raigoza (30-15) will face sophomore Quin Gilliam of Loras (27-12) later tonight in a win-or-go home matchup. The winner will move on to face either third-seeded Augsburg senior Donny Longendyke (25-3) or sixth-seeded sophomore Adarios Jones of Augustana (34-3).
