KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 9, 2017) – Three members of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team will be representing Kings Point at the NCAA National Championships this weekend in La Crosse, Wis. – senior Patrick Rooney (Belgrade, Minn.) and sophomores Erik Beshada (South River, N.J.) and Victor Raigoza (Orland, Calif.).
 
The first session of the two-day event is scheduled to begin on Friday, March 10, at noon Eastern Time, with the second session set for 7 p.m. Friday night. On Saturday, the third session starts at 11 a.m. Eastern and the Finals are set for Saturday night beginning at 8 p.m.

How They Got There
The trio of Mariners earned a trip to Wisconsin after their third-place finishes at the NCAA East Regional Championships back on Feb. 24-25. Beshada placed third in the 157-pound bracket after battling to a 5-1 record over the two-day regional event. Rooney also finished third in his bracket (184) after going 4-1, and Raigoza went 4-1 in the heavyweight bracket to come in third place as well.
 
A Look At The Matchups/Brackets
Beshada (16-14) will look to upset the #2 seed in the 157-pound bracket, junior Logan Thomsen of Wartburg College (30-2). A potential second-round matchup would be against either #7-seeded freshman Logan Meister of Ferrum (26-6) or sophomore Dempsey King of RIT (27-5), while a wrestleback matchup against either #4-seeded Ursinus senior Derek Arnold (28-1) or Augsburg senior Grant Parker (22-10) awaits the loser. SUNY Cortland senior Bobby Dierna (17-0) is the overall #1 seed in the bracket, with Thomsen seeded second, Wabash senior Nick Bova (31-2) seeded #3 and Arnold claiming the #4 seed.
 
Rooney (16-1) will battle the #8 seed in the 184-pound bracket, senior Jared Fekete of Wheaton College (31-5). A potential second-round matchup would be against either #1 seed freshman Owen Webster of Augsburg (29-1) or Messiah junior Derek Beitz (35-12), while a wrestleback matchup against either Rhode Island College junior Michael Gallagher (24-8) or Augustana junior Christos Giatras (25-5) awaits the loser. The top four seeds in that bracket are Webster, senior Christopher Chorzepa of Williams (25-1) at #2, junior Jordan Newman of Wisconsin-Whitewater (19-3) at #3 and freshman Jordan Bushey of SUNY Oswego (35-0) at #4.
 
Raigoza (30-14) faces #4-seeded junior James Bethel of SUNY Oneonta (39-2) in the opening round at 285. A potential second-round matchup would be against either #5 seed sophomore Paul Triandafilou of Gettysburg (26-2) or sophomore Quin Gilliam of Loras (27-11), while a wrestleback matchup against either #7 seed junior Justice Davis of Concordia-Morehead (21-9) or Waynesburg sophomore Jake Evans (45-3) awaits the loser. The top four seeds at 285 are Delaware Valley senior Zachery Roseberry (37-0) at #1, Wartburg junior Lance Evans (25-0) at #2, Augsburg senior Donny Longendyke (24-3) at #3 and Bethel at #4.
