HOBOKEN, N.J. (Jan. 21, 2017) – On Saturday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team competed in a Centennial Conference tri-meet hosted by Stevens Institute. The Mariners won both of their neutral-site matches over McDaniel, 36-12, and #29 Gettysburg, 20-19. The victories improve USMMA's record to 4-7 (2-2 Centennial) on the season.
Five Mariners won both of their bouts on the afternoon – sophomore Tyler Craig (Snowhegan, Maine) at 133, classmate Erik Beshada (South River, N.J.) at 157, freshman Joshua Glantzman (Allenwood, N.J.) at 165, classmate Kurtis Hahn (Winfield, Mo.) at 184 and sophomore Blake Bunce (Trophy Club, Texas) at 197.
The only blemishes on the scoresheet for Merchant Marine against the Green Terror of McDaniel College were two forfeits to start and end the match at 125 and 285. The Mariners rattled off eight straight victories from 133-197 with Craig earning a 9-1 major decision, junior Nathan Henkle (Saint Paris, Ohio) pinning his opponent, classmate Trent Dolby (Las Vegas, Nev.) grabbing a 5-3 decision, Beshada battling to a 16-1 technical fall, Glantzman earning an 11-2 major, freshman Collin Keil (Whitehouse, Ohio) fighting out a 7-2 decision, Hahn – like Beshada – with a 16-1 tech fall and Bunce ending matters with a 4-2 decision.
In the exciting one-point win over D3Wrestle's nationally-ranked Bullets of Gettysburg College, the Mariners again lost 125 via a forfeit, before Craig recorded a pin at 133 to tie the score at 6-6. After back-to-back decisions by Gettysburg put the Bullets ahead 12-6, Beshada and Glantzman recorded a 16-1 technical fall and a 7-4 decision, respectively to give USMMA a 14-12 lead.
Gettysburg responded with a major decision at 174 to take the lead back, but Hahn and Bunce went back-to-back with decisions to give the Mariners a narrow 20-16 lead. Merchant Marine could not give away more than three points at the heavyweight class, and sophomore Brandon Joest (Kendallville, Ind.) was defeated by just a narrow 1-0 decision to seal the victory for USMMA.
In exhibition bouts, junior Travis Ahrens (Mims, Fla.) and sophomores Chad Puglio (Myerstown, Pa.), Joseph Fiore (Canadensis, Pa.) and Christian Willoughby (Blountsville, Ala.) all were victorious.
The Mariners are back in action next Saturday, Jan. 28, when they travel to Allentown, Pa., to the campus of Muhlenberg College for their final Centennial tri of the season. The squad will face the host Mules and the Bears of Ursinus College at the event.
