EWING, N.J. (Jan. 17, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team lost a non-conference dual meet to #21 The College of New Jersey on Tuesday night, 32-10, at the Lions' Packer Hall. The defeat drops the Mariners' record to 2-7 on the season, while TCNJ improves to 7-8.
After falling behind 6-0 on a forfeit at 125, USMMA responded with a 9-6 decision victory at 133 by sophomore Tyler Craig (Snowhegan, Maine). Back-to-back wins for the Lions at 141 (major decision) and 149 (pin) put the hosts ahead by 13 points, 16-3.
Sophomore Erik Beshada (South River, N.J.) won his matchup at 157 via an 11-0 major decision, but TCNJ responded with three-straight wins in the next three classes to seal the meet victory. Sophomore Blake Bunce (Trophy Club, Texas) was victorious at 194 by a 5-2 decision for the Mariners' final triumph of the evening.
The Mariners are back in action this coming Saturday, Jan. 21, with a Centennial Conference tri-meet hosted by Stevens in Hoboken, N.J. The squad will have two neutral-site duals against Gettysburg and McDaniel. Action is set to get underway at 11 a.m. at the Ducks' Canavan Arena.
