BALTIMORE (Jan. 14, 2017) – On Saturday, the USMMA wrestling team lost two Centennial Conference matches to Washington & Lee, 29-18, and Johns Hopkins, 27-15, down at Hopkins' Goldfarb Gymnasium. The Mariners' record falls to 2-6 (0-2 Centennial) on the season, while the Generals improve to 3-4 (1-0 Centennial) and the Blue Jays improve to 2-5 (1-0 Centennial).
Sophomores Blake Bunce (Trophy Club, Texas) and Victor Raigoza (Orland, Calif.) both had perfect days for Merchant Marine, as they won both of their bouts over the two matches.
Against W&L, the Generals earned victories in the opening six weight classes to clinch the overall win with a 29-0 score. The Mariners finished strong, however, by winning the remaining four classes. Freshman Collin Keil (Whitehouse, Ohio) recorded a 6-1 decision at 174, sophomore Joseph Fiore (Canadensis, Pa.) registered a first-period pin at 184, Bunce pinned his opponent in the third period at 197 and Raigoza squeaked out a 5-2 decision at 285.
In the loss to the host Blue Jays, sophomore Tyler Craig (Snowhegan, Maine) took three points at 133 with a 7-1 decision to cut Hopkins' lead to 6-3. JHU took the next three classes with two majors and a decision to take a 17-3 lead. Freshman Joshua Glantzman (Allenwood, N.J.) defeated his opponent via a 7-1 decision at 165. A pin for Johns Hopkins at 174 clinched the win for the Blue Jays. Bunce and Raigoza finished the match on a high-note for Merchant Marine with a 7-1 decision and a first-period pin, respectively.
The Mariners will return to action on Tuesday night, Jan. 17, with a non-conference dual match at Head Coach Greg Ilaria's alma mater, the College of New Jersey. First bout is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Lions' Packer Hall.
