ITHACA, N.Y. (Nov. 20, 2016) – On Sunday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team participated in the annual New York State Championships, hosted by Cornell University. The Mariners placed 16th out of 27 teams at the event, which featured Division I, II and III and junior college teams from all across New York.
Three USMMA wrestlers earned All-New York State honors by placing in the Top Eight their respective brackets – sophomore Victor Raigoza (Orland, Calif.) was sixth and junior Francis Walter (Mount Prospect, Ill.) came in seventh in the 285-pound heavyweight bracket, while freshman Kurtis Hahn (Winfield, Mo.) came in eighth in the 184-pound bracket.
Raigozza finished the day with a 2-3 record, while Walter was 3-2 and Hahn was 2-3. In the B-bracket (open championship), freshman Collin Keil (Whitehouse, Ohio) wrestled to a 3-2 record in the 174-pound bracket.
