BRISTOL, R.I. (Nov. 12, 2016) – Senior Patrick Rooney (Belgrade, Minn.) had a very impressive day for the USMMA wrestling team at the season-opening Roger Williams Invitational on Saturday up in Rhode Island. Rooney went a perfect 4-0 on the day to win the 184-pound bracket – a very tough bracket that included three nationally-ranked wrestlers. He was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Invitational.

Two other Mariners, sophomore Victor Raigoza (Orland, Calif.) and freshman Kurtis Hahn (Winfield, Mo.), placed fifth in their respective brackets.

Rooney picked up wins over Bridgewater State's Henry Oberlander (Fall 4:47) and Roger Williams' Connor Humphries (Decision, 5-3) in the first two rounds, which set up a semifinal bout against the reigning National Champion at 174 Ben Swarr of Messiah (the #1 ranked wrestler at 174 currently this season). After wrestling to an 8-8 tie through late in the third period, Rooney recorded a take down at the buzzer for the 10-8 decision victory. Rooney took the bracket with a 5-0 decision win in the finals over Messiah's Victor DeFrance.

Raigoza won his first match of the day at the heavyweight class over Johnson & Wales' Johanser Joeseph via a pin in 2:01. He suffered a pin in the second round, but rebounded with four straight wins in the wrestlebacks bracket. In the consolation semifinals, he fell via a third-period pin, but finished on a good note with a 2-0 decision victory over Bridgewater State's Tom Arseneault in the fifth place match.

In his first career collegiate competition, Hahn had two very notable pins over nationally-ranked opponents in the 184-pound bracket (the bracket that Rooney won), en route to his fifth-place finish. He lost his first round matchup, but won four straight in the wrestlebacks, including pins over #13 ranked Joe Albina of Roger Williams (32 seconds) and #8 ranked Derek Beitz of Messiah (1:33). He lost the consolation semifinal match against Swarr (who had just been defeated by Rooney), but rebounded to take the fifth-place match over Connor Humphries of Roger Williams.
