Wrestling Opens Season This Weekend; Full Schedule Released Including Trip To MSG In Late November

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 8, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team opens the 2016-17 season this weekend at the Roger Williams Invitational up in Bristol, R.I. This season marks Head Coach Greg Ilaria's ninth at the reins of the program.
 
This year's schedule includes 13 events over four months leading up to championship season in February-March. The Mariners will square off in dual matches against all seven other Centennial Conference opponents.
 
After the season-opening RW Invite this weekend, Merchant Marine will travel up to Cornell University next Sunday, November 20, to compete in the New York State Championships.
 
The Mariners then, for the first time, will take part in the Grapple at the Garden at the World's Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden in Manhattan on Sunday, Nov. 27. For more information on the exciting annual event, follow this link.
 
There are two events in December, beginning with the New Standard Corp. Invitational, hosted by York College in Pennsylvania on Saturday, Dec. 3. USMMA then hosts the annual Mariner Duals on Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
 
January is the busiest month of the season with six dates of competition, beginning with the Long Island Duals on Sunday, Jan. 8, followed by a Centennial tri-match in at Johns Hopkins where the Mariners will take on the host Blue Jays and Washington & Lee.
 
Merchant Marine travels to The College of New Jersey for a mid-week dual match on Tuesday, Jan. 17 before another Centennial tri on Saturday, Jan. 21, this time at Stevens in Hoboken, N.J., where the Mariners face Gettysburg and McDaniel in a couple of neutral site duals.
 
The following Saturday, Jan. 28, USMMA faces Muhlenberg and Ursinus in another tri, hosted by the Mules in Allentown, Pa.
 
On Sunday, Jan. 29, the Mariners take part in the 23rd Annual All-Academy Championships at Navy in Annapolis, Md.
 
The Mariners start February with two dual matches – home against Centennial foe Stevens on Wednesday, Feb. 1, and on the road at arch-rival Coast Guard on Wednesday, Feb. 8, where USMMA will look to earn the point in the overall standings of the 2016-17 Superintendents' Trophy.
 
The 2016 Centennial Conference Championships will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Stevens in Hoboken, N.J.
 
After the Centennials, Merchant Marine will look to qualify wrestlers for nationals at the NCAA East Regional Qualifier on Saturday, Nov. 25. The 2016 NCAA National Championship Event is slated for Mach 10-11, at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse, Wis.
