KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 21, 2016) – Earlier this month during the NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) revealed the 2016 Scholar All-Americans and USMMA had three wrestlers earn the prestigious honor – seniors Ricky Fisher (Nashville, Tenn.) and Mike Maye (Pearl River, N.Y.) and junior Nathan Twito (Ames, Iowa).
Fisher, Maye and Twito were three of 180 Division III student-athletes honored by the NWCA. To earn the NWCA Scholar Award, wrestlers must have a cumulative or last academic year grade point average of 3.20 and meet one of the following three criteria, qualify for the NCAA III Championships, place in the top-six at the NCAA III Regional, or win more than 66.0 percent of matches and wrestle in 50.0 percent of scheduled dates.
Fisher ended his remarkable career by qualifying for and competing in the 2016 NCAA DIII Wrestling Championships over a week ago. He placed sixth in the nation at 197 and became the eighth Mariner in program history to earn All-American distinction. Fisher won back-to-back Centennial Conference Championships at 197 and also placed second at the NCAA East Regional Meet. This is also Fisher's second straight season earning NWCA Scholar All-American honors. Through the first term of the 2015-16 school year, Fisher, a marine engineering major, has compiled a GPA of 3.535.
Maye came in fifth place in the 165-pound weight class at the NCAA East Regional Meet back on February 27. He is majoring in mechanical engineering and his grade point average through the first term of 2015-16 was 3.498.
Twito, who was the Centennial Conference Champion at 149 this season, also came in fifth place in his weight class at the NCAA East Regional Meet. Like Fisher, Twito is majoring in marine engineering and has compiled a GPA of 3.455.
