CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (March 11, 2016) – On Friday, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy senior wrestler Ricky Fisher (Nashville, Tenn.) won three of his four bouts at the NCAA National Championship Meet and has earned All-American distinction. Fisher will now continue on to the second day of competition on Saturday with a chance to finish as high as third in the nation.
In his first match of the day, the senior defeated Eddie Terres of Lakeland College via a 9-3 decision. With the victory, Fisher moved on to face the #7 seed in the bracket, Michael Swider of Wheaton College (Ill.). Fisher lost a 6-2 decision to Swider and dropped to the wrestle-backs.
In the evening session, Fisher squared off against Centenary College's (N.J.) Etiini Udott in the first round of the wrestle-backs. After falling behind to Udott, Fisher had a strong third period and earned a 12-8 victory.
Up next in the All-American Round was a match against a familiar foe, Dennis Melendez of Hunter College, who defeated Fisher in the first-place bout at the NCAA East Regional Meet two weeks ago. Fisher came out strong and earned eight points with a takedown and two near-falls. In the second period, he was able to pin Melendez in 4:01 to move on to the second day.
On Saturday, Fisher's first match of the day will come again Malcolm Watson of Loras College. The session begins at 11 a.m. CST (12-noon EST) with Fisher's bout, #258 of the tournament will be assigned a mat shortly after wrestling begins.
