ALLENTOWN, Pa. (Jan. 30, 2016) – On Saturday, a majority of the USMMA wrestling team travelled to Muhlenberg College for a Centennial Tri-Meet while the rest of the squad competed at the All-Academy Championships. After dropping the first match to Ursinus, 28-16, the Mariners earned a 36-10 victory over the host Mules to earn a split on the day. The Mariners' dual record moves to 7-8 (2-3 Centennial) on the season.
Sophomore Francis Walter (Mount Prospect, Ill.) pinned both of his opponents at the heavyweight class at the tri-meet, beating Ursinus' Zeb Pfeiffer in 1:32 and Muhlenberg's Christian Schmid in 2:13. Freshman Joseph Fiore (Canadensis, Pa.) also had two wins on the day at 184, besting Ursinus' NIcholas Suk via a disqualification and then topping Muhlenberg's Ethan Pentz via a 4-0 decision.
Also picking up a victory in the first match against the Bears was senior Matt Hiltz (Woodbine, Md.), who earned a 10-1 major decision over Ursinus' Robert Endy at 165.
Against the Mules, freshman Tyler Craig (Snowhegan, Maine) and sophomore William Hardin (Oxford, Ala.) both won via forfeits at 125 and 133, respectively. At 149, freshman Chad Puglio (Myerstown, Pa.) pinned Kash Calderon in 3:24 and sophomore Travis Ahrens (Mims, Fla.) followed with a 13-12 decision at 157. Sophomore Daniel Viera (Bentonville, Ark.) pinned his counterpart from Muhlenberg, Zach Goldrosen, at 197 in 4:09.
