LEXINGTON, Va. (Jan. 30, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team competed in the 22nd Annual All-Academy Championships on Saturday, hosted by VMI. The Mariners finished sixth overall at the event and placed best out of the three Division III teams that competed (Coast Guard and Norwich were the others), and therefore were crowned the D3 Team Champions.
Five Mariners earned victories at the very competitive event. A big highlight of the day was freshman Kimo Dial's (Poway, Calif.) 9-2 decision victory in the quarterfinals of the 133-pound bracket over Division I wrestler Austin Harry from Army.
Also picking up wins were senior Mike Mui (Hingham, Mass.) at 125 with a pin in 43 seconds over Norwich's Jacob Forsman in his first consolation match, junior Nathan Twito (Ames, Iowa) at 149 with a consolation round victory over Norwich's James Duncan via a 15-4 major decision, senior Ricky Fisher (Nashville, Tenn.) at 197 with a 2-0 decision over Coast Guard's Phil Azzari in the first consolation match and freshman Brandon Joest (Kendallville, Ind.) at 285 with a 5-0 decision over Kevin Painten from Coast Guard, also in his first consolation match.
Army won the overall championship with 91 points, followed by Navy with 88.5 points in second and Air Force rounding out the top three with 86 points.
The Mariners also sent wrestlers to compete in a Centennial Tri-Meet on Saturday against Ursinus and Muhlenberg at Muhlenberg in Allentown, Pa. Full results for that event are not available just yet. Check back on www.USMMASports.com on Sunday for the recap from that event.
Up next, the Mariners will host Centennial Conference opponent NYU this Wednesday night, Feb. 3. First bout is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium. A live video feed of the event will be available by following this link.
