HOBOKEN, N.J. (Jan. 27, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team lost on the road at #19 Stevens on Wednesday night, 28-13. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 6-7 (1-2 Centennial), while the Ducks improve to 14-2 (2-0 Centennial) with their program-record 10th straight win.
USMMA quickly fell behind after conceding a forfeit at 125, but earned back nine points over the next two bouts. At 133, freshman Kimo Dial (Poway, Calif.) recorded an 8-2 decision over Stevens freshman Joey Borai. Classmate Daniel May (Stafford, Va.) followed with a pin in 1:28 of the first period of his bout at 133 against Ducks' sophomore Andrew Dickerson to put Merchant Marine ahead in the match, 9-6.
Stevens responded with four-straight decisions from 149-174 and then a pin of their own at 184 to take a 24-9 lead and clinch the victory.
Senior Ricky Fisher (Nashville, Tenn.) triumphed in a 12-3 major decision at 197 over junior Danny Moore, but the Mariners dropped a major decision at the heavyweight class to end the night.
Merchant Marine returns to the mats this Saturday, Jan. 30, when they compete in two separate events – the All-Academy Championships, hosted by VMI in Lexington, Va., and a Centennial Tri-Match hosted by Muhlenberg where the Mariners will face Ursinus and Muhlenberg in Allentown, Pa.
