Cedar Rapids, IA - Mike Mui (Hingham, MA) completed action at day one of the 2014 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships with a 1-2 record and has been eliminated from the tournament. Mui, the 2014 Centennial Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler, dropped his opening bout of the NCAA Tournament before bouncing back to win his match in the evening session. The sophomore grappler was knocked out of the event with a second loss and finished the 2013-14 season with a 26-8 record.
Mui opened the day against the fourth-seed in the 125 brakcet, Mike Fuenffinger of Augsburg. The USMMA representative was unable to gain any traction in the match until very late and ultimately suffered a major decision loss, 13-3 loss.
Mui recovered quickly in the evening session with two quick takedowns in his bout against the seventh-seed, Central College's Daniel Page. He held a 4-2 lead after the first period and the two wrestlers traded reversals in the second as Mui took a 6-4 edge into the final two minutes. Mui sealed the match down the stretch with a takedown at the 60 second mark and earned back points at the final horn to seal the 13-6 victory.
Mui squared-off with the sixth-seed, Robert Bidlingmaier of Olivet, in his second round consolation match. Bidlingmaier notched a pin in the first period as the USMMA wrestling season officially came to an end.
