Wilkes-Barre, PA – Sophomore Mike Mui (Hingham, MA) finished second at the NCAA Division III East Region Qualifier to earn a place in the 125 pound bracket at the 2014 NCAA Tournament. Mui was the second seed in Sunday's field, pinning #5 nationally ranked Christopher Donaldson in the semifinals to secure his spot at the national championships. Merchant Marine finished the event in 13th place and will send one competitor to the NCAA Tournament for a second straight year after Branden Yeik qualified in 2013.
Mui received a first round bye before knocking off Erick Orellana 8-4 in the quarterfinals. The sophomore's lone loss of the day came in the title bout against #2 Paul Bewak of Johns Hopkins. Mui will head to the NCAA Tournament with a 24-6 record in 2014, including nine pins.
Freshman Brian Walker (Huntsville, AL) quickly wrestled his way into the heavyweight quarterfinals with a first period pin in his opening match followed by a 5-2 decision over William Fletcher. The rookie was narrowly edged 4-3 by Ursinus' Matan Peleg in the quarters, sending Walker to the consolation bracket. Walker would lose his next match before earning fifth place at the event with a 4-0 shutout of NYU's Anthony Chu. Walker finishes his freshman season with a 25-9 record that included seven pins.
Isaac Hammonds (Dover, OH), Jack Walsh (Glen Allen, VA), Ben Stallings (Fairfax, VA), and Tyler Russell (Georgetown, ME) all posted 1-2 records on the day, winning one match in the consolation bracket of their weight class. Senior Jake Walker (Kansas City, MO) won his first bout at 165 pounds before dropping back-to-back contests to be eliminated from NCAA Tournament contention. Sam Fry (Sturgis, MI) duplicated Walker's performance at 184 pounds with a first-round triumph before back-to-back decision losses.
Mui will compete at the NCAA Tournament on March 14 in Cedar Rapids, IA.
