by Wesley Davis
The USMMA wrestling team opened the 2013-2014 season Sunday at the New York State Intercollegiate Championships, hosted by Cornell University at Newman Arena. The Mariners finished 16th out of 19 teams while tournament host Cornell came away with the championship for the second straight year. The Mariners only had three competitors in the invitational bracket as there was also competition in a separate open division.
Tyler Russell (Georgetown, ME), who competed at 197 pounds, picked up a victory against Andrew Cole of SUNY Oswego in a 13-2 blowout. Josh Miller (Jackson Hole, WY), who competed at 174 pounds, pinned his way to victory against Javon Toliver of Jamestown Community College in the consolation round of the tournament. Both men came out with 1-2 records under their belt after the tournament.
USMMA returns to the mat on December 7 at the York Invitational.
