Kings Point, NY – The United States Merchant Marine Academy wrestling squad lost a tight bout to the Stevens Institute Ducks by a score of 25-13 Thursday night in Kings Point, NY.
On an evening which the Mariners recognized the contributions of their three graduating seniors: Mason Reed (Dover, NJ), Ian Nisley (Hingham, MA), and Jacob Summers (Amarillo, TX); Merchant Marine couldn't muster the strength to comeback against the Ducks.
Stevens won the first four matches of the evening, two of which by pin fall, dropping Merchant Marine into an early 0-19 hole.
Mariners' sophomore Branden Yeik turned the momentum with a huge victory for the Mariners; stopping the Ducks' streak. Down by a single point in the waning seconds of the match, Yeik's emphatic takedown of Leo Wortman brought the Kings Point crowd to their feet, as they celebrated their first decision of the dual meet.
Although they lost their next bout, USMMA would win their next three as juniors Josh Miller and Sam Fry won their decisions 8-2 and 2-0 respectively. Junior Tyler Russell followed up with a major decision victory over Will Sharkey (14-2) to cut into the Mariner deficit, but it just wasn't quite enough for the Mariners to dig themselves out of an early hole.
USMMA will head to Baltimore, MD for the Centennial Conference Championships on Feb. 23 at 10:00 AM.
