West Point, NY – The USMMA wrestling team finished fifth and was the top Division III team in the field at the annual All-Academy Championships hosted by Army over the weekend. The Mariners finished with 17.5 team points, more than arch rival Coast Guard and Division I VMI. Navy would take home the All-Academy title, topping the bracket in seven weight classes.
Josh Miller (Jackson Hole, WY) took third place at 174 pounds, winning three bouts by pin fall. He wrapped up the day by putting the shoulders of Coleman Gracey, a NCAA D-I qualifier, to the mat in the consolation finals. Miller was dominant after dropping his first bout of the tournament as the junior would rattle off three straight pins in the opening period of his match.
Nic Watson (Cocoa Beach, FL) bounced back after an opening round loss to the number one seed in the 165 pound bracket, eventually take fourth-place in the weight class. Watson defeated Vinnie Bellaran of Division I Citadel, 10-3, to earn his spot in the consolation finals. Tyler Russell (Georgetown, ME) started his day in the 197 pound weight class with a 13-11 upset triumph over fourth seeded Marshall Haas of Citadel.
The USMMA wrestling team returns to action Wednesday night for its annual dual meet with the Coast Guard Bears.
