Wrestling Tackles New York State Championships to Start Season

"B" Bracket Results (Sunday)

Ithaca, NY - The USMMA wrestling team opened the 2012-13 campaign over the weekend at the New York State Collegiate Championships, hosted by Cornell University.  The event featured numerous powerhouse squads, including six NCAA Division I programs.  The Mariners finished the event 18th out of 19 teams while Cornell captured the top spot and had Nahshon Garrett named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the competition.

Bernard Watson (Fort Morgan, CO), who competed at 157 pounds, picked up the lone Merchant Marine victory in his first match of the tournament.  The sophomore knocked off Jay Lysne of Division I Hofstra in a 17-11 shootout.  Watson's two losses would then come against the wrestlers who would finish the event in fifth and sixth place.

USMMA returns to the mat December 1st as they prepare for the York Invitational.
